When the dogwoods start blooming and the water climbs out of the 50s, Lake Hartwell wakes up in a hurry. The blueback herring push shallow, the birds get noisy, and the striped bass go on the feed. If you ask me when to book a trip, spring is always near the top of the list.
Where the fish go in spring
As the lake warms, striper follow the bait into the creeks and up the rivers. Points, flats and the mouths of spawning coves all hold fish, and some of the best action of the year happens in just a few feet of water. Surface bites are common on calm mornings — there is nothing quite like watching a striper crush a bait on top.
Why spring trips are great for everyone
- Fast action with fish feeding aggressively in shallow water
- Comfortable weather — cool mornings and mild afternoons
- Great for kids and first-timers because the bites come often
- Beautiful scenery with the shoreline in full bloom
Booking a spring date
April and May are two of the busiest months on my calendar, and weekends fill up weeks in advance. If you want a specific date, call or text 864-417-7163 and we will get you on the books. Weekday mornings are easier to grab and often fish even better with less boat traffic.
